The biggest game release of the fall lands this week: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 officially launches Friday, October 23, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. Thanks to a staggered early-access rollout, a large chunk of the player base is already in — and the early numbers are the strongest the series has posted in years.
What's playable right now
Anyone who pre-ordered any edition digitally has had the full campaign since last Friday, and early access to the DMZ extraction mode opened on October 20. Traditional multiplayer unlocks at the official launch on October 23. If you didn't pre-order, Friday is your day — check your platform's store page for your region's exact unlock time before planning a midnight session.
The early reception
Eurogamer reports the game is holding a "Very Positive" 92% rating on Steam across more than 3,100 user reviews — the highest for a Call of Duty in over a decade, and a sharp reversal from last year's Black Ops 7, which sits at "Mostly Negative" (37%). IGN scored the roughly six-hour campaign 8/10. The fair caveat, which Eurogamer itself flags: early-access players are the series' keenest fans, and the rating can move once multiplayer opens to everyone on Friday.
Why this one matters to the franchise
Activision has confirmed Modern Warfare 4 is the final chapter of the Modern Warfare sub-series. Chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl told The Game Business that the next title will start a new sub-franchise, with the groundwork laid in this game. So Friday's launch is both a release and a handoff — the end of the storyline that has carried Call of Duty since 2019's reboot, and the last time this particular cast carries a launch weekend.
